Keeping an eye on things
As your cat starts to slow down you will want to keep an eye on their behavior and habits to make sure they are as comfortable as possible. Here ae a few things to be aware of to keep your cat happy and relaxed.
Cats are still susceptible to fleas in their later years even if they are not adventuring out of their own garden. Neighbouring cats and other animals wondering into your garden can leave fleas in your grass. Keeping your grass short can help reduce the chance of fleas jumping onto your cat and coming into your home. Eggs can lay dormant for up to 6 months so clean your cats toys regular.
Signs include being agitated, lying in their litter tray and trying to get up to higher places so make sure to not let your cat sleep on staircases. If not treated quickly your cat may start biting itself and drawing blood. If you suspect your cat has fleas take them to your local vet where they can advise treatment based on their weight and age. It can be more expensive than generic brands but from experience its works fast and is stronger. You can purchase home sprays for carpets and furniture.
Ingrown nails is a common problem with older cats as they will spend more time inside their home and will not be wearing down their nails as quick as they used to. Make sure to inspect their nails regular and look for any curled or ingrown nails. Signs including licking their paws more often or limping when walking.
If you notice any issues make sure to call your local vet and book an appointment as soon as possible to get their paws looked at. This may be causing your cat pain when walking and making the area worse. The vet will clip the nails and clean any wounds. Enquire about purchasing a cleaning solution that you can use at home to help keep the area clean and assist with healing.

It's important to keep a check on your cat's weight as it will keep strain off their old bones and help with arthritis. There are a few ways you can try to weigh your cat at home.
You can use home scales to weigh your cat. If they don't like to sit on then for long you can try weighing yourself and then again while holding your cat. If they don't like to be held you can weigh their carry case and then again with them inside.
We recommend doing this monthly to keep track of any fluctuations and to keep a record to show your vet at future visitations. As it becomes a routine it will help your cat get used to it. You can always reward them afterwards with a treat.
